The Appalachian Trail Conservancy - This is the 'mother' organization of the A.T. which is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the maintenance of the trail and acquisition of private lands to fall under its auspices. Probably the best site to visit to start learning more about the trail.

Appalachian Trail Long Distance Hiking Association - Another good informational site and starting off point.

White Blaze.Net - This is where long distance hikers and Appalachian Trail enthusiasts meet to share their experiences and advice with others. This is probably one of the most valuable sites for the technical information needed to properly prepare for the six month journey.

2006 AT Hiker Roster - This is only a partial list, but will give you an idea of some of the demographics of folks making the walk this year.

Hiking Glossary - Long distance hiking is a whole culture full of terms related to the sport.

Backpack Gear Test.Org - Want to see how experienced hikers fared with that super duper pack or set of boots you were looking at? One of the best sites for non-biased reviews of gear out there.

Trail Place.Com - Another informational AT site that espouses 'traditional' values associated with hiking the AT. Whether you think they are too 'stodgy' or not, there is no disputing the valuable information on this site presented by those who do know the trail.

Awol on the Appalachian Trail- In 2003, David Miller (aka Awol), a 41 year old engineer quit his job to backpack 2,172 miles from Georgia to Maine. Sound familar? There are many similarities between David and Ron. Ironically, David is also a fellow Floridian residing in Titusville, FL not more than an hour away from Orlando. David got in touch with us a few weeks ago after hearing about Ron's hike, and asked that we look for him at Trail Days in Damascus, VA. He was traveling there with his family to promote his new book, Awol on the Appalachian Trail. We both enjoyed meeting David, and the opportunity we had to talk about him, Ron, the trail and his new book. For anyone wanting to know more about life on the trail, I suggest this book.
